July 2009

Probably the prettiest flowers at the moment are Lagerstroemia. We have some of the earliest flowering varieties which are the only ones that we can hope to get flowers on in the UK. They need to be grown in very warm sheltered positions as they are not the toughest of plants.
Another of the fantastic but also less hardy plants is Acacia baileyana ‘Purpurea’ AGM. In spring they are covered in the typical yellow Acacia flowers but at this time of year with its lovely blue grey foliage and purple growing tips it really is a stunning plant. Well worth the effort of providing it with THE best sheltered site or keeping in a pot and providing it with more protection in winter.

May 2009

Winter seems to have been particularly hard this year – relative to the last 10 years – but we have had little damage to anything.
Although spring has hardly sprung yet, we are getting the fantastic fragrances from the usual suspects – i.e. citrus, Trachelospermum, Cytisus battandieri, cordylines and pittosporums etc. Fragrance is such a bonus to these great plants.
We have these under glass and polythene so they are a bit earlier than they would be outside.

This month we are getting more plants coming in. e.g. large olives, figs, palms and grapes for immediate sale and some new and regular liners (small plants) for growing on. This includes some grasses and shrubs that are new to us but it will be some time before they will be available for sale.
Once upon a time we propagated hundreds of thousands of plants ourselves but these days people want an instant garden and as we have changed the type of plants we sell so dramatically for much of our stock growing them ourselves is not an option. For instance we have 200 year old Olive Trees and 100 year old cloud trees!

March 2009

Welcome to our new and (we think) much improved website. We hope that you find it easy to use. We welcome your comments on this site or the plants that we stock.

Spring is here!
For early spring there can be few more desirable trees than Acacia. With their bright yellow pompom flowers and delicate fragrance they give a real spring feeling to a garden.

We stock Acacia dealbata Gaulois Astier which is a vigorous tree, hardy to about -70C. It flowers profusely and is a much improved form of A.dealbata. The foliage has a very soft and feathery appearance. It should not be planted in a very exposed position.

Acacia baileyana purpurea has gorgeous blue grey foliage but is less hardy at about -40C. It has a more pendulous habit and is therefore more suited to a smaller garden. The foliage has the same soft feathery appearance as Gaulois Astier.

We also have Acacia pravissima which has quite different (almost Jurassic) foliage but the same lovely flowers. This is also a smaller somewhat pendulous tree. Perhaps the hardiest variety to about -70C.

Happy browsing.
